Gilbert Nicely, a self-taught artist who started in the 1970s as a cabinetmaker, has come to be regarded by many as one of the country's leading wood sculptors of hand-carved furniture and objects.
Nicely's pieces, which are made of solid Jamaican woods, are inspired by the vegetation and the animal life that make up the rustic surroundings of his home. Nicely was awarded the prestigious Bronze Musgrave Medal from the institute of Jamaica in recognition of his work in the field of sculpture.
